Causes of High Cholesterol
The build-up of cholesterol in the blood begins early in life, often in adolescence, and increases over time. Cholesterol is found in food of animal origin, not in food of plant origin. Over time, cholesterol deposits along the walls of the blood vessels causes them to become less elastic. In other words, hardening of the arteries occurs from extra cholesterol not processed properly by the liver and kidney.
Symptoms of High Cholesterol
There are no specific or obvious symptoms of high cholesterol which can be identified. Most often, a blood test for total cholesterol indicates the diagnosis. A blood test includes LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein bad cholesterol), HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein good cholesterol), and triglycerides (blood fat). A total cholesterol of less than 200 mg/dl is considered desirable. When the level is above 200 mg/dl, the risk of heart disease increases.
