What is Gout?
Approximately 1,000,000 people in the United States suffer from gout, ninety percent of them men.
Gout predominantly attacks males after puberty with a peak age of 75. Among women, gout attacks
usually occur after menopause.
Causes of Gout:
Gout is caused by an excess of uric acid in the body. This excess can be caused by an increase in
the production of uric acid in the body, by an under-elimination of uric acid by the kidneys, or by
an increased intake of food containing purines which are metabolized into uric acid. Certain meats,
seafood, dried peas and beans are particularly high in purines. Alcoholic beverages also significantly
increase uric acid levels and precipitate gout attacks.
With time, elevated levels of uric acid in the blood may lead to deposits of the uric acid around joints.
Eventually, the uric acid may form needle like crystals in the joints, leading to acute gout attacks.
Uric acid may also collect under the skin as tophi or in the urinary tract as kidney stones.
Symptoms of Gout:
The small joint at the base of the big toe is the most common site of an acute attack. Other joints
affected include the ankles, knees, elbows, wrists, and fingers. Acute attacks are characterized by
a rapid onset of pain in the affected joints followed by warmth, swelling, reddish discoloration, and
marked tenderness. These painful attacks usually subside within hours to days, with or without medication.
Most patients with gout will experience repeated attacks of arthritis over the years.
Treatment of Gout (falls into two categories):
1. Eliminate the pain and inflammation in an acute gout attack.
2. Inhibit the production and/or enhance elimination of uric acid for chronic gout.
