High Blood Pressure
High blood pressure (HBP), or hypertension as the disease is known medically, is the most common chronic illness in the United States. An estimated 55-60 million Americans have high blood pressure. High blood pressure is the leading cause of strokes and major risk factor for heart attacks.
Causes of High Blood Pressure Primary or Essential Hypertension is the most common form of hypertension at 90%. Unfortunately, the exact causation is not known. However, factors contributing to primary hypertension include an unblanced water volume and excess sodium content in the body, an impairment of the kidney, a malfunction of the nervous system or blood vessels and various abnormal hormone levels in the body. Secondary Hypertnsion, the less common form of hypertension, comprises 10% of the people who have the disease and can be a consequence of kidney disorders or the side effect of a medication. The kidney plays a major role both in Primary and Secondary hypertension. When the kidney malfunctions, the complete circulation of body fluid and blood is impaired causing an increased workload on the heart, hence causing the blood pressure to become imbalanced.
Symptoms of High Blood Pressure
HBP does not produce noticeable symptoms until it reaches a high range. The first indication of HBP may be headaches or flushing of the face. An extremely high stage 3-4 HBP or prolonged HBP can lead to such events a stroke or a heart attack. Angina is a chest pain that indicates that the heart muscle is not getting enough bnlood. This pain is caused by severely narrowed and clogged blood vessels (coronary arteries).
Treatment for High Blood Pressure
Increase the kidney's excretin of sodium (for those with excess sodium) Dilate blood vessels to increase blood flow (for those with plaque build-up) Block certain nerve receptors to help the kidney function better Block certain substances that are over- or under-produced by the kidney.
