Stress Got You Down? Look To Your Breathing

n this day and age, most of us simply can’t avoid stress. Every day brings traffic, last minute deadlines, a kid needing to get picked up, and new bills in the mail. Instead of running away from stress (usually impossible), face it head on. Acknowledge the stress and then help eliminate it by looking to your breathing. One of the easiest ways to help balance yourself in a stressful situation is to adopt the Sama Vritti technique, also known as equal breathing.

You don’t need years of yoga practice to master this technique. Simply breathe in through your nose for a count of four, then exhale for a count of four. That’s it. Really! Simply the act of counting your breaths will create awareness of the moment and sooth away all the thoughts rushing through your mind. You’ll feel yourself start to relax as you focus just on breathing in and out. Your problems won’t exactly melt away, but you’ll be able to face them with a calm and focused mind. As you improve in Sama Vritti try to increase from a four count to a six count or even an eight count.
